Sherman Oaks is part of the City of Los Angeles, so chimney permits on either side of the hill go through the same Department of Building and Safety. Our Los Angeles bookings come mostly from the neighborhoods just over the hill, where many chimneys were laid up in the 1920s and 1930s. Permit time has to fit the calendar too, so we plan rebuilds there well ahead of the rainy months. The 1994 Northridge earthquake brought down chimneys across this part of the city, and many stacks standing now are rebuilds sitting on original fireboxes. We check the joint where new brick meets old on each yearly visit, and on hillside lots we look at the straps and roof ties too.
